Candidate statement — Fiona Mansell

Dear mem­bers, I am seek­ing your sup­port and ask that you please give me your vote by elect­ing me to the posi­tion of Nation­al Assis­tant Sec­re­tary in the 2025 Nation­al Elec­tion.

Intro­duc­tion: My career start­ed as a sea­far­er for Inter­is­lander 13 years ago while sole­ly rais­ing 2 beau­ti­ful chil­dren.

Dur­ing the years from 2016 of being a ship­board del­e­gate I devel­oped a pas­sion to speak up for myself and my comrades.This led on to becom­ing more active­ly involved in MUNZ. My first senior role on the local Exec­u­tive in 2018 was the Welling­ton Women’s Rep a role I thrived in. This led onto becom­ing the Nation­al Women’s Rep in 2019. In 2021 I was elect­ed unop­posed as the Assis­tant Branch Sec­re­tary. In March 2024 I was elect­ed as the Welling­ton Branch Sec­re­tary and again unop­posed Novem­ber 2024, a chal­leng­ing role I thor­ough­ly enjoy.

Experience/Achievements/Goals:

• KR-IIL Preg­nan­cy Pol­i­cy 2019, enhanced Parental Pol­i­cy 2023
• Nego­ti­at­ed bet­ter terms/conditions for mem­bers.
• Represented/supported mem­bers through disciplinaries/workplace issues.
• Developed/organised del­e­gates train­ing.  
• Organ­ised mem­bers to attend NZ/International con­fer­ences.
• Grown the mem­ber­ship (induc­tions, sign­ing new mem­bers, vis­it­ing work places).
• Organ­is­ing joint work­ing par­ties.
• Involved with Inter­na­tion­al Trans­port Fed­er­a­tion-Fer­ry Round­table, Fer­ry Task Force, Our Fer­ries Our Future Cam­paign.

Mis­sion: To see this union grow, always has been, empow­er mem­bers through education/training, speak up for those that strug­gle, con­tin­ue to sup­port and rep­re­sent you the mem­bers. To fight for our future. How­ev­er, I’m keen to fur­ther my knowl­edge and under­stand­ing about the Mar­itime Union and our Indus­try, that is way I’m stand­ing for this posi­tion.
