Maritime women and youth united

Youth and women unionists meeting in Wellington brings together emerging leaders for maritime workers

dsc_1727A one day con­fer­ence for youth and women mem­bers is tak­ing place on Mon­day 7 Novem­ber in Welling­ton.

Union mem­bers from branch­es through­out New Zealand were joined by inter­na­tion­al reps from Aus­tralia, the USA, Cana­da, and the UK.

The day is fol­lowed by the four day Nation­al Con­fer­ence of the Mar­itime Union of New Zealand start­ing on Tues­day 8 Novem­ber.

Speak­ers include Mar­itime Union of Aus­tralia nation­al wom­ens offi­cer Mich Elle Myers, RMT UK del­e­gate Karl­son Ling­wood, UNITE organ­is­ers Tom Buck­ley and Nadia Abu Shanab, MUA edu­ca­tion offi­cer Mick Cross, for­mer Green MP and polit­i­cal activist Sue Brad­ford, ILWU Cana­da VP Steve Nas­by and ITF offi­cer Fin­lay McIn­tosh.

Dis­cus­sions have ranged from youth organ­is­ing, union­ism as fem­i­nist work, work­ing class polit­i­cal cul­ture, and build­ing our rep­re­sen­ta­tion among these sec­tors.
