The Maritime Union of New Zealand is backing the Coalition for Good Jobs in PNG, made up of PNG unions campaigning keep public assets in public ownership.
Maritime Union of New Zealand National Secretary Joe Fleetwood says the PNG privatisation plan which included ports, air transport and power, would not benefit PNG workers.
Mr Fleetwood says the Maritime Union has campaigned against privatisation of ports and public assets in New Zealand, and would offer its support to PNG workers.
“Workers in New Zealand and PNG both share an interest in secure jobs, wages and conditions, and public services.”
The next National Council meeting of the Maritime Union of New Zealand in November would be hosting representatives of the Papua New Guinea Maritime and Transport Workers Union and the Maritime Union of Australia who will report back on the progress of the campaign.
The meeting will discuss strategies for how the Maritime Union of New Zealand can mobilise the New Zealand Union movement in support of this important campaign, says Mr Fleetwood.
Mr Fleetwood says the Maritime Union has a strong and growing relationship with maritime workers in Papua through the Regional Maritime Federation and the International Transport Workers Federation.
